Zheng Qinwen Scores Victory for China, but Norway Falters at United Cup

In a stunning upset, Zheng Qinwen of China defeated Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic at the United Cup on Saturday, Dec. 30. Meanwhile, despite a singles victory from Casper Ruud, Norway was unable to prevent a loss to the Netherlands.

The 21-year-old Zheng, who previously won the WTA Tour’s Zhengzhou Open in October, emerged victorious with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 scoreline in her match against the seventh-ranked Vondrousova. “It was just a normal match for me,” said Zheng, who is now ranked 15th in the world. “It doesn’t matter who I face. I’m happy with the win and excited for my team.”

Zheng’s victory was followed by teammate Zhang Zhizhen’s win against Jiri Lehecka, marking China’s successful debut at the mixed teams tournament. Despite a singles win from Ruud, Norway faced defeat to the Netherlands.

Excitement continues to build at the United Cup, with Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber gearing up to compete, as well as world number one Iga Swiatek leading the Polish team in Perth.
