Malacañang enhances rewards for athletes | Philippine Sports News

President Marcos announced on Wednesday that the cash incentives for podium finishers in the recent Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and Asean Para Games have been doubled. The President also expressed his intention to support the athletes’ support crew, acknowledging their role in the athletes’ success.

Over 500 medalists who represented Team Philippines in the SEA Games and Asean Para Games were rewarded with cash bonuses. The total amount of the cash incentives was increased to P148 million, surpassing the original allocation of P74 million under the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.

PSC Chairman Richard “Dickie” Bachmann commended the athletes for their achievements and emphasized the importance of their recognition. He also highlighted the significant contributions of the national para athletes, who finished fifth overall in the Asean Para Games.

Notable athletes who excelled in the competitions include swimmer Gary Bejino, thrower Cendy Asusano, chesser Darry Bernardo, and gymnast Carlos Yulo. Yulo led the Filipino athletes in medal standings, earning two golds and two silvers in the SEA Games.

The funding for the cash bonuses comes from the net cash income of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor), which is remitted to the National Sports Development Fund of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The recognition and increased incentives aim to show the country’s gratitude to the athletes and their support crew for their dedication and hard work.
