Ryohei Suzuki, Japanese superstar, trained in the Philippines for ‘City Hunter’ role



An exclusive look into the making of the highly-anticipated live-action adaptation of the legendary manga “City Hunter” in Tokyo was recently revealed. The manga, which has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, is beloved by fans globally. The trip to Tokyo for the film’s production was filled with exciting moments and unique experiences.

During the visit to the set, Japanese star Ryohei Suzuki, who plays the lead character Ryo Saeba in the film, impressed with his professionalism and dedication to his role. The production team ensured that Suzuki was in top form for demanding action scenes by providing massages between takes.

Aside from witnessing the behind-the-scenes action of “City Hunter,” the columnist also had the opportunity to meet Suzuki in Hong Kong during the Asian Film Awards. Suzuki shared that his character, Ryo, underwent firearms training in the Philippines due to their illegality in Japan.

The iconic setting of “City Hunter” in the Shinjuku, Kabukicho area of Tokyo was another highlight of the film. Despite the challenges of securing permits to shoot in Shinjuku, the government granted permission for the filming of this national treasure of Japan.

Suzuki emphasized the importance of maintaining the essence of the original “City Hunter” while updating certain aspects to resonate with modern audiences. The film’s adaptation is now available for streaming on Netflix, bringing the action-packed world of “City Hunter” to a global audience.
