Carlos Yulo Secures Spot in 2024 Paris Olympics

Antwerp, Belgium – Carlos Yulo, a 23-year-old Filipino gymnast, has earned a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics after his impressive performance in the floor exercise qualifications at the 2023 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. Despite a challenging start in the competition, Yulo persevered and secured his place among the world’s best.

Yulo’s qualification came as he clinched the highest-ranked eligible athlete spot in the floor exercise, finishing third in the qualifications with a score of 14.600. Notably, he was the only gymnast in the finals who had not yet secured a pathway to the Paris Olympics through the team or all-around qualifications.

The road to securing a spot in the Paris Olympics differs from the apparatus finals. In the qualifications of the team event and all-around, gymnasts have the opportunity to earn a ticket to Paris. However, Yulo stood out among his competitors, as all other floor exercise finalists had already secured their qualification through these pathways.

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) confirmed Yulo’s qualification for the Paris Olympics, making him the second Filipino athlete to secure a spot alongside world No. 2 pole vaulter EJ Obiena.

Yulo’s journey to qualifying for Paris was not without obstacles. He had a disappointing start at the world championships, finishing 91st in the all-around with a score of 67.765. A mishap during the vault routine resulted in a zero score, while a fall during his dismount in the still rings earned him a score of 11.566, landing him in 132nd place.

This will be Yulo’s second appearance in the Olympic Games, following his participation in the Tokyo edition. In Tokyo, he came close to the podium with a fourth-place finish in the vault discipline.

Yulo’s stellar performance in the floor exercise qualifications showcases his determination and skill, solidifying his status as one of the most promising gymnasts in the world. All eyes will be on Yulo as he represents the Philippines in the upcoming Paris Olympics, aiming to secure a medal and make his country proud.
