Army maintains readiness as NPA is urged to launch assaults against soldiers

The New People’s Army (NPA) has been ordered to launch attacks against government forces as it marks its 55th anniversary. The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) Central Committee issued a statement directing NPA members to carry out various tactical offensives using a range of weapons. This includes ambushes on government troops’ units and outposts.

However, Philippine Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala dismissed this order, stating that the CPP-NPA is already on the verge of collapse and lacks active guerrilla fronts. Despite this, the military remains vigilant against possible attacks.

The AFP vowed to dismantle the remaining communist guerrilla fronts by the end of 2024. The NPA, which was established in 1969, currently has about 1,500 fighters, a significant decrease from its peak in 1987.

Efforts to restart peace talks between the CPP’s political arm and the Philippine government were initiated last year. The government is hopeful for a framework to resume negotiations and achieve peace.
