Supervise animal pounds to prevent abandonment

Local Government Units Urged to Take Care of Animal Pounds During Holy Week

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Grace Poe has called on local government units to ensure that animal pounds are not left unattended during Holy Week, following a viral incident of animal abuse on social media.

Poe emphasized the importance of properly caring for animals in city pounds to prevent such cases of abuse, citing a recent incident where cats were reported eating their own kind in a city pound.

“Even during the Holy Week break, it is the obligation of the city pounds to watch over, feed, and take care of the animals in their care,” Poe said.

She also highlighted the responsibility of households in ensuring the safety and welfare of their pets, especially when they are left alone.

Poe, who is pushing for the passage of Senate Bill No. 2458 to revise the Animal Welfare Act, aims to strengthen animal welfare standards and impose stricter penalties on violators.

As the Holy Week approaches, Poe hopes that everyone will reflect on showing kindness and compassion not only to fellow humans but also to animals.

Households and local government units are encouraged to prioritize the well-being of animals during this period and beyond.
