Red tide advisory remains in effect across 5 coastal areas in Visayas and Mindanao

Red Tide Warning Still in Effect in Coastal Waters of Aklan, Bohol, Capiz, Iloilo, and Zamboanga del Sur

The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) has issued a red tide warning for the coastal waters of Aklan, Bohol, Capiz, Iloilo, and Zamboanga del Sur. This warning serves as a caution to the public.

In Shellfish Bulletin No. 21 released on Friday, the bureau specifically advised against collecting shellfish in various areas. These include Batan Bay in Altavas, Batan, and New Washington in Aklan; Sapian Bay in Ivisan and Sapian in Capiz; and Mambuquiao and Camanci, Batan in Aklan. The warning also covers the coastal waters of Panay, Pilar, President Roxas, and Roxas City in Capiz.

These areas have tested positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or toxic red tide beyond the regulatory limit. Therefore, the public is strongly advised not to consume any type of shellfish or Acetes sp. (alamang) gathered from these locations as they are unsafe for human consumption.

In addition to the aforementioned areas, the red tide warning also extends to Gigantes Islands and Carles in Iloilo, Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol, and Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur.

However, the good news is that fish, squids, and crabs from these areas are safe for human consumption as long as they are fresh and thoroughly washed, with gills and intestines removed before cooking.

It is important for the public to take heed of this red tide warning issued by the DA-BFAR to ensure the safety and well-being of consumers.
