PAGASA Releases Flood Warning for Pasig-Marikina and Tullahan River Basins

The Pasig-Marikina and Tullahan river basins are expected to experience heavy monsoon rains as typhoon Hanna, known internationally as Haikui, intensifies. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued their fifth flood advisory on Monday, Sept. 4, warning residents in these areas to brace for more rain and possible flooding.

PAGASA first issued a flood warning on Aug. 31 at 8 a.m., and as the typhoon continues to gain strength, they have now released their fifth advisory. The agency predicts that light to moderate rains will continue to pour over the Pasig-Marikina and Tullahan river basins in the next 24 hours.

Affected areas include Pasig, Marikina, and Tullahan rivers and their tributaries, such as Upper Marikina River—Rodriguez, Antipolo, and San Mateo in Rizal, Quezon City, and Marikina City. Lower Marikina River—Pasig City and Mandaluyong City; Pasig River—Pasig City, Makati City, Mandaluyong City, and Manila City; Tullahan River—Quezon City, Caloocan City, Malabon City, Navotas City, and Valenzuela City; Mango River—Rodriguez, Rizal; Nangka River—Marikina City, and San Mateo and Antipolo in Rizal; and San Juan River—Quezon City, San Juan, and Manila City.

Residents living near mountain slopes and low-lying areas in these cities are advised to take necessary precautions, according to PAGASA. The agency also highlighted the possibility of local flooding due to inadequate drainage systems and impounded water.

As the country braces for an extended period of rainfall, residents are urged to remain vigilant and stay updated with the latest weather advisories to ensure their safety.
