Goring intensifies into a typhoon; Northeastern Cagayan under Signal No. 2

Typhoon Goring Intensifies, Signals Raised in Cagayan Province

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Goring has intensified, leading state meteorologists to raise Signal No. 2 over the northeastern part of Cagayan province.

The latest notice from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Friday night revealed that Goring now has maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gustiness of up to 150 kph.

Goring was last located 205 km east of Calayan, Cagayan, and is currently moving south southwest at a speed of 10 kph.

The town of Santa Ana in Cagayan is now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2, indicating that the area may experience wind speeds of 62 kph to 88 kph in the next 24 hours, posing a “minor to moderate threat to life and property.”

Several areas are also under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1, including Batanes, Babuyan Islands, the eastern portion of mainland Cagayan, the eastern portion of Isabela, and the northern portion of Aurora.

Pagasa expects heavy rainfall of around 100 mm to 200 mm from Friday night to Saturday evening in the extreme northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan. Other areas, such as Babuyan Islands, the northwestern and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan, the northeastern portion of Isabela, Abra, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur may experience 50mm to 100 mm of rain during the same period.

Although Goring is not expected to make landfall, it will intensify the southwest monsoon or habagat, causing heavy rains and gusty winds in Aurora, Bataan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, and most of Mimaropa on Saturday.

According to Pagasa’s latest track, Goring will continue moving southeast until Sunday and then turn north on Monday morning, intensifying into a super typhoon. It will remain a super typhoon-category cyclone until Tuesday night before weakening into a typhoon as it moves closer to the eastern portion of Taiwan.

Pagasa warned the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices to take all necessary measures to protect life and property. People living in highly susceptible areas are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials.
