Malaysian Film Takes the Lead in QCinema 2023’s Asian Next Wave Awards



QCinema International Film Festival 2023 Crowns Amanda Nell Eu’s “Tiger Stripes” as Big Winner

Malaysian Malay-language body horror film “Tiger Stripes” by director Amanda Nell Eu emerged as the big winner at the QCinema International Film Festival 2023. The film took home the grand prize, the Asian Next Wave Best Picture, and the Best Director Award for Eu.

The film was praised for its unique blend of horror and social commentary, particularly addressing the issues faced by women today, and for its exceptional production values and powerful performances.

Expressing her gratitude for the award, Director Amanda Nell Eu said, “Thank you so much to QCinema and the jury. It is so meaningful to share the film to a South East Asian audience and we are truly honoured to receive these awards. Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

The Asian Next Wave competition section featured eight feature film directorial debuts from various countries, including the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and Thailand. Other winners in this category included Kim Tae-yang’s “Mimang” for the NETPAC Jury Prize and Jopy Arnaldo’s “Gitling” for Best Screenplay.

Additionally, the film “Abang Adik” won the Best Lead Performance award, the only acting award given by QCinema.

In addition to the Asian Next Wave, QCinema also recognized several short films across different categories, including QCShorts and QCSEA. Winners in these categories included Aedrian Araojo’s “Animal Lovers,” Che Tagyamon’s “Tumatawa, Umiiyak,” and Stephen Lopez’s “Hito.”

Furthermore, QCinema’s Critics Lab also awarded the Critics Prize to Giselle Lin for “I Look into the Mirror and Repeat to Myself,” and bestowed the Alexis Tioseco and Nika Bohinc Award for Film Criticism to Lé Baltar.

The festival also paid tribute to the life and work of QCinema Foundation Member Teddy Co.
