12 fabulous queens set to dazzle and dominate in the latest installment of ‘Drag Race PH’

The highly anticipated second season of “Drag Race Philippines” premiered on HBO Go on Wednesday night, featuring 12 queens vying for the title of the country’s next drag superstar and a cash prize of P1 million. The season showcases a diverse group of queens, including three transwomen, adding a new layer of inclusivity to the competition. “Drag Race Philippines” is the official franchise of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which has spawned spinoff versions in various countries across the globe.

To celebrate the season premiere, HBO Go hosted a media event where journalists had the opportunity to interview the queens. The queens arrived in stunning outfits, ranging from campy to glamorous, with some donning gowns fit for an international beauty pageant. According to designer Rajo Laurel, one queen wore a gown worth P800,000 ($15,000 USD) for the occasion.

Rajo Laurel, who received criticism in the first season for his harsh critiques of the contestants, is back as one of the regular judges alongside host Paolo Ballesteros, “Drag Race” alumna Jiggly Caliente, and actress KaladKaren. Throughout the season, they will be joined by guest judges such as Maricel Soriano, Anne Curtis, Bretman Rock, Tessa Prieto, and Gloria Diaz.

When asked if he would be more lenient this season, Laurel stated that he remained true to himself and wasn’t asked to tone down his critiques. He jokingly added, “Si Tessa (Prieto) yung bitchessa,” referring to Prieto’s tendency to be blunt. The queens, however, expressed that they were accustomed to being judged and critiqued and saw it as part of their training.

During the premiere, the queens showcased their talent and gave it their all to impress the judges. The competition is visuals-heavy, requiring the queens to invest in their outfits, shoes, makeup, and wigs. The winner of the first challenge received a “cash tip” of P80,000 ($1,500 USD), which they joked covered all their expenses.

The queens shared the lessons they learned on the show, which they believe are relatable to LGBTQIA+ individuals and others. They emphasized the importance of discovering one’s capabilities, letting go of judgment, being vulnerable, collaborating with others, and expressing oneself.

New episodes of “Drag Race Philippines” Season 2 air every Wednesday at 7 p.m. on HBO Go, with “Untucked” episodes also available on the same day.
