Philippine Basketball Legend Samboy Lim Dies at 61

On Saturday, December 23, the Philippine basketball community mourned the passing of iconic player Samboy Lim at the age of 61. Lim, known as “The Skywalker,” passed away peacefully after a long medical battle. His official Facebook page confirmed the news, stating that Father Franklin Beltran, a former Letran Chaplain, administered the Last Rites Extreme Unction during his final moments at the Medical City.

Lim was remembered as a man of faith, exceptional courage, humility, and grace. He was surrounded by loved ones during his final moments, including his wife Lelen, children Jamie and Johannes, and other family members, friends, and former teammates.

The basketball star started his career at Letran in the NCAA before joining the San Miguel Beermen in 1986, where he played for 11 years and earned numerous accolades, including nine PBA championships and a PBA Grand Slam title in 1989. Lim’s outstanding contributions to the sport led to his induction into the PBA Hall of Fame in 2009, and the retirement of his jersey number, No. 9, by the San Miguel Beermen.

Lim’s health took a turn in 2014 when he collapsed after a PBA Legends exhibition game and slipped into a coma. He eventually emerged from his comatose state in 2015 and continued to receive treatment and therapy at home. Last September, his former national team teammate Chip Engelland made a heartwarming visit to Lim.

The news of Lim’s passing has left a profound impact on the Philippine basketball community, with fans and fellow athletes expressing their condolences and honoring his legacy.
