Extreme heat strikes Cagayan and Eastern Samar on Sunday



Extreme heat was felt in two areas in the Philippines on Sunday, with a heat index of 47 °C recorded in Aparri in Cagayan and Guiuan in Eastern Samar. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), two other areas, Laoag City in Ilocos Norte and Dagupan City in Pangasinan, also experienced high temperatures with a heat index under 45°C.

Pagasa reported that a total of 22 areas reached a heat index under the “danger” category, with temperatures ranging from 42 to 51°C. Heat cramps and exhaustion are likely at this level, with the possibility of heat stroke with continued exposure to the heat or sun.

Among the 22 areas, six locations reached 44°C, including Bacnotan in La Union, Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, and San Jose in Occidental Mindoro. Meanwhile, several places experienced temperatures ranging from 42 to 43°C, such as Naia in Pasay City, MMSU in Batac, Ilocos Norte, and Tacloban City in Leyte.

Pagasa advised the public to take precautions during periods of extreme heat to prevent heat-related illnesses.
