Korean Celebrities Grieve the Loss of Lee Sun-kyun, Star of ‘Parasite’ and ‘Coffee Prince’

Lee Sun-kyun, a decorated South Korean actor known for his role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” was found dead on Dec. 27, shocking fans and the global entertainment industry.

The 48-year-old star was reportedly found deceased in his car parked near Waryong Park in Jongno, Seoul at approximately 10:30 a.m. KST. His passing is being investigated as a potential suicide, with authorities reportedly discovering charcoal briquettes in the front passenger seat of his vehicle, which could have caused carbon monoxide poisoning and subsequently led to his death.

Prior to his passing, Lee Sun-kyun was implicated in a police investigation related to illegal drug use, with suspicions arising in October. He was questioned by law enforcement for 19 hours on Dec. 23, amid allegations of drug use at the residence of an entertainment bar hostess in Gangnam.

Although Lee Sun-kyun tested negative for illegal substances in a standard drug test, he remained under considerable stress due to the ongoing police investigation. This brought immense pressure on him, ultimately culminating in the tragic incident.

Following his passing, numerous Korean stars, including “Parasite” co-star Claudia Kim, expressed sorrow and disbelief over Lee Sun-kyun’s death. Kim, who worked with the late actor on the Netflix series “Gyeongseong Creature” and the film “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and second chances.

In the wake of Lee Sun-kyun’s death, his agency, Hodu&U Entertainment, released a somber statement confirming his passing and requesting privacy for the grieving family and colleagues.

The funeral service for Lee Sun-kyun was set to take place at Room 1 of the Seoul National University Hospital funeral hall in Jongno, with his interment planned for Dec. 29 in Buan County, Jeollabuk province. The beloved actor leaves behind his wife, actress Jeon Hye-jin, and two sons.

The South Korean entertainment industry and fans worldwide are mourning the loss of Lee Sun-kyun, the talented actor who left an indelible mark on the global film landscape.
