Philippines Dominates Hong Kong in U-18 Softball World Asia Cup Opener

Fujian, China – The Philippine U-18 women’s softball team got off to a flying start as they demolished Hong Kong with a resounding 7-0 victory in their opening match of the U-18 World Softball Asia Cup. The tournament took place on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Represented by athletes from Bacolod City High School, the Filipina softbelles wasted no time in asserting their dominance. They took an early two-run lead in the first inning and followed it up with five more runs in the fifth inning to secure their first victory in the competition.

Coach Sheirylou Valenzuela expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance but emphasized that they would not become complacent, as tougher matches lie ahead. “It is a great way to start the tournament, but we are not going to get complacent as we have tough matches ahead of us,” said Valenzuela. “We give 100 percent in every game and treat every game as a championship game. Although our pitching is not good, we still managed to do well enough in other areas to win today (Tuesday),” she added.

The team received praises from the President of the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL), Jean Henri Lhuillier. Lhuillier commended the team’s strong start and expressed his hope that this victory would serve as the momentum they need to reach the finals.

The next challenge for the Philippine team will be a match against host country China on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The tournament offers slots to the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup Championship, which will take place next year.
