First-ever UN ‘gastronomy tourism’ event coming to the Philippines in June

Manila – The Philippines is gearing up to host the first United Nations forum on gastronomy tourism for the Asia-Pacific region in June. This two-day event aims to highlight the potential of culinary delights in boosting a country’s tourism industry.

Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco expressed excitement for the upcoming gastronomy tourism forum, emphasizing its significance in showcasing the country’s rich food culture and talents. The event is set to take place in Cebu, a city known for its historical food culture.

Scheduled from June 26 to 27, the forum will precede the 36th Joint Commission Meeting for East Asia and the Pacific and South Asia on June 28. The United Nations defines gastronomy tourism as a unique tourism experience centered around food-related activities and products.

The Department of Tourism will feature two key gastronomy tourism programs during the event – the Philippine Eatsperience and the Philippine Experience Program (PEP). The PEP recognizes the crucial role of food and gastronomy in shaping the country’s tourism landscape.

Moreover, the recently launched Philippine Eatsperience food market in Rizal Park and Intramuros will also be highlighted. Featuring 30 food joints offering iconic dishes from various regions, the food park showcases Filipino favorites such as lechon, Bicol express, and classic street foods like kwek-kwek and kikiam.

Overall, the gastronomy tourism forum aims to promote the Philippines as a top culinary destination in the Asia-Pacific region, showcasing its diverse and delectable food offerings.
