A coalition of major political parties in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has officially endorsed Sulu governor Sakur Tan for the position of chief minister in the upcoming Bangsamoro Parliament elections. The coalition, known as the BARMM Grand Coalition (BGC), includes prominent parties such as the Salaam Party, the Bangsamoro People Party (BPP), the Al Ittihad-UKB Party, and the Serbisyong Inklusibo Alyansang Progresibo Party.

During the General Assembly of Salaam Party-BGC in Maimbung, Sulu, Basilan Cong. Mujiv Hataman announced the coalition’s decision to support Tan for the top position in BARMM. Hataman stated that after a series of meetings and consultations with officials, members of political parties, non-government organizations, and civil society groups, the BGC believed that Tan was the most qualified candidate for the role.

In response, Tan expressed his gratitude for the coalition’s support and emphasized his vision for a peaceful, progressive, and prosperous Bangsamoro region that respects the rights of all sectors and gives them a voice in the government.

Tan has a long history in politics, serving as a municipal councilor of Jolo in 1981 and as Sulu’s first district representative from 1987 to 1992. He also previously held the position of governor of Sulu from 1996 to 2001 and from 2007 to 2013.

The upcoming Bangsamoro Parliament elections mark a significant milestone for the region, as it prepares to elect its first chief minister.
