New FDCP CEO to Step Down from Cinemalaya, Turn Down Directing Offers

Jose Javier Reyes, the newly appointed chairperson and CEO of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), is set to step down from his role as an officer of the annual Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. As part of his new responsibilities, Reyes will also have to decline any further offers to work behind the camera, although he will still be able to teach at De La Salle University and the College of St. Benilde.

Reyes’s journey to the top began when Tirso Cruz III announced his resignation in March, sparking speculation about who would take over the position. At a recent press conference, Reyes expressed his support for Cruz, acknowledging the actor’s passion for acting and understanding his decision to step down.

The FDCP is also gearing up to honor key figures in the Philippine cinema industry at the “Parangal ng Sining” event on April 19. Honorees include cultural scholar Nicanor Tiongson, Filipino screenwriter Clodualdo Del Mundo Jr., and mentor Armado Lao. Additionally, awards will be given to actress Gloria Romero, film scholar Teddy Co, and the late actress Jaclyn Jose.

Reyes emphasized the importance of the next FDCP chairperson possessing patience, a love for Philippine movies, and the ability to navigate the political landscape. As the FDCP prepares to participate in the Marche du Film Festival in Cannes in May, Reyes aims to promote the Philippines as an ideal location for film production. The agency’s film booth at the festival will be in partnership with Singapore.
