Barbers warn Yang of show-cause order if he fails to appear

Surigao del Norte Rep. Issues Warning to Businessman Michael Yang

Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers has issued a warning to businessman Michael Yang, stating that a show-cause order may be issued against him if he fails to attend a House of Representatives committee hearing. Barbers made these statements during a press briefing, where he discussed the possible actions that the House committee on dangerous drugs could take if Yang does not show up.

Barbers, who heads the said panel, emphasized the importance of attendance at the hearing, stating that if Yang ignores the show-cause order, an arrest order may be issued. He mentioned that other individuals who have previously failed to attend hearings are now subject to arrest by the Philippine National Police, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and National Bureau of Investigation.

The committee is set to discuss the issue further in an upcoming hearing, where they will delve into the alleged involvement of shell companies in owning warehouses linked to illegal drug activities. Barbers clarified that Yang has not been accused of anything and that the committee simply wants him to attend the hearing and clear his name.

Yang, a former economic adviser to President Rodrigo Duterte, has been in the spotlight recently following revelations about his alleged connections to a warehouse in Pampanga where illegal drugs were seized. The warehouse, owned by Empire 999 Realty Corporation, was found to contain over 500 kilograms of shabu worth P3.6 billion.

Yang has not issued a statement regarding his attendance at the House hearing. Despite attempts to reach out to his legal counsel, Atty. Raymond Fortun, it was revealed that there has been no communication with Yang since March 2022. Fortun added that they have not spoken since the hearings on the Pharmally issue concluded.
