Cinemalaya Victory Holds Immense Significance for Dolly de Leon

Actress Dolly de Leon expressed her joy as she accepted the best supporting actress award at the 19th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival on Sunday night. This was her first time receiving an award on a local stage, after previously winning accolades internationally. Dolly’s performance in Carl Joseph Papa’s “Iti Mapukpukaw” earned her the honor, adding to her already impressive collection of five trophies for her role in Ruben Ostlund’s “Triangle of Sadness.” Dolly also appeared in Dustin Celestino’s “Ang Duyan ng Magiting,” another finalist in the festival.

Speaking about her win, Dolly highlighted the importance of the film’s message, which revolves around dealing with trauma and finding healing. She emphasized that the movie conveys the idea that it’s okay to open up about one’s feelings and that there are people ready to listen and provide a safe space for healing.

In the same event, Mikoy Morales was named best actor for his outstanding performance in Gian Arre’s “Tether.” Mikoy expressed his shock and gratitude for the recognition, stating that it hadn’t fully sunk in yet. He also reflected on his journey as an actor, mentioning that his first film, “4 Days,” was also a Cinemalaya finalist almost a decade ago.

Bon Andrew Lentejas received the best supporting actor award for his role in “Huling Palabas” and dedicated his win to fellow actor JM Canlas, who passed away shortly before the festival concluded. Lentejas spoke about the challenge of portraying his character in the movie, particularly mastering the Bisaya language.

The festival also recognized Pat Tingjuy as the best actress for her role in Samantha Lee’s “Rookie.” Tingjuy expressed her disbelief at receiving the award and her hope to continue acting. She was thrilled by the support the LGBTQIA+ community showed for the film and hoped that it would inspire individuals to accept themselves and be brave.

Carl Joseph Papa’s “Iti Mapukpukaw” was named Best Picture, marking a bittersweet victory for the director. The film, which is the first animated full-length feature in Cinemalaya, also won the Netpac Award. Papa expressed his happiness for the animation team involved, highlighting the scarcity of original animated content from the Philippines.

The festival also honored other notable films, with “Ang Duyan ng Magiting” winning Best Ensemble and “Tether” being awarded Best Sound Design. Other winners include Kevin Mayuga’s “When This is All Over” for Best Original Music Score, Kaye Banaag for Best Production Design, and Martika Escobar for Best Cinematography.

Overall, the 19th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival celebrated remarkable talent and highlighted the importance of storytelling through diverse films.
