The British Council Celebrates 45 Years of Educational and Cultural Ties in the Philippines

The British Council in the Philippines recently marked its 45th anniversary with a special event held at The Blue Leaf Events Pavilion in Taguig City on February 16. The theme for the occasion was “Committed Connections,” highlighting the organization’s dedication to fostering partnerships and relationships in the fields of education and culture.

Since its inception in the Philippines in 1978, the British Council has played a pivotal role in facilitating collaborations and exchanges in education, arts, and culture through various initiatives and projects across the country. Leveraging the UK’s expertise in these areas, along with its global network, the British Council has contributed to positive changes in different sectors in the Philippines.

The organization has worked closely with educators, policymakers, academics, creatives, and entrepreneurs in the country. In the arts sector, collaborations on innovative projects have advanced creative enterprise and inclusive growth. An example is the partnership with the Design Center of the Philippines in 2020, which influenced the development of a National Design Policy.

In the field of education, the British Council has supported internationalization efforts through programs like the Access and Competitiveness through Internationalization of Higher Education program (ACT-IHE). This program has enabled Filipino scholars to pursue studies abroad and fostered partnerships between UK and Philippine universities.

Additionally, the British Council has been instrumental in providing the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to Filipinos aiming to study, work, or reside abroad. The organization has also collaborated with different Philippine offices and organizations for the Justice Sector Reform Programme: Governance in Justice (GOJUST) to enhance access to justice for vulnerable groups.

As part of the 45th-anniversary celebration, the British Council hosted the Study UK Alumni Awards, recognizing Filipino alumni who have excelled in their fields after studying in the UK. Winners in categories like Science and Sustainability, Business and Innovation, Social Action, and Culture and Creativity were acknowledged for their outstanding achievements.

Looking ahead to 2024, the British Council has identified the Philippines as a “super-priority” country, recognizing its growth and potential. The organization aims to continue nurturing its relationship with Filipinos and providing opportunities for collaboration and development.

Overall, the British Council’s work in the Philippines has left a lasting impact on the country through its various programs and initiatives. The organization’s commitment to educational and cultural ties has contributed to the development and growth of the Philippines on both a national and regional level.
