Marcos visits Mindanao, praises AFP as peace fighters

In a recent address to members of the 6th Infantry Division in Maguindanao del Norte, President Marcos emphasized the importance of soldiers sticking to their expertise as “warfighters” despite taking on the role of peacekeepers in Mindanao. He acknowledged the progress in the region, with former separatist groups now cooperating with the government for the betterment of conditions in Mindanao.

While soldiers have evolved to become peacemakers, Marcos reminded them to continue focusing on their core competency as warfighters, especially as some still get wounded in armed encounters. He commended the troops for their efforts in taking the fight to the enemy and ensuring success in their missions.

During his visit, Marcos honored seven soldiers wounded in a clash with the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and presented them with the Wounded Personnel Medal. He praised the military’s efforts in preventing and countering violent extremism, emphasizing the importance of partnerships with community stakeholders, including groups like the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Moro National Liberation Front.

Marcos expressed confidence in the military’s capabilities to secure the upcoming Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao parliamentary elections in 2025. He also highlighted the need for partnerships based on mutual respect and understanding in order to foster peace and prosperity in the region.

The President visited Camp Siongco in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte, where the 6th Infantry Division’s headquarters is located, after his engagements in neighboring towns. At the camp, military officials presented assorted firearms surrendered by residents of provinces under the division’s jurisdiction in recent months.
