Water Rationing Begins in Metro Iloilo as El Niño Worsens

Water Rationing Begins in Iloilo City Due to Decreasing Supply Levels

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The Metro Pacific Iloilo Water (MPIW) has implemented a rotational water supply scheme in response to decreasing water levels from its sources. The company announced that service interruptions will occur in different service areas for three to five-hour time frames.

The rotational supply scheme will affect various areas such as Arevalo So-oc, Mandurriao West, Mandurriao East, Jaro Diversion, Pavia East, and Santa Barbara during specific time slots throughout the day.

According to MPIW, the water rationing distribution began last Wednesday at 6 p.m., impacting service across Iloilo City and portions of Pavia and Santa Barbara.

The reason cited for the decrease in water levels is the rapid decline of the water level at the Maasin Dam, one of MPIW’s water sources, due to limited rainfall inflows. As of March 20, the dam’s water level was close to a critical level of 93.60 meters, below the normal operating level of 94.85 meters.

To address the situation, the company plans to deploy water tankers to critical areas to augment the water supply. Additionally, efforts are being made to produce an additional 10 million liters per day to supplement the existing supply.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has issued an advisory indicating that Iloilo City and the province are currently experiencing a “dry spell” condition, with below-normal rainfall levels for three consecutive months.
