Technological University of the Philippines Manila – TUP Leonns was hailed as the grand champion of the first-ever Skills Olympics: Digital Bridge Design and Prototype Construction Competition during the PhilConstruct Manila on 04 November 2022 held at the World Trade Center Metro Manila, Pasay City.
The Competition aims to bridge the gap between the knowledge acquired by civil engineering students in schools and the technical competencies required in the construction industry while unlocking their creativity and innovation potential. Fifteen (15) universities from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao joined the competition, where they will experience realistic bridge design and construction on a small scale. Their performance throughout the competition will determine which three (3) teams will advance to the final phase, where the Grand Champion will be crowned.
Bentley Education provided the participating students and mentors with proficiency trainings and full access to their digital design software, namely OpenBridge Designer, Lumen RT, and Synchro 4D to be able to take on the demands and deliverables of the competition.
With how it was structured, the competition stayed true to its intent of providing an immersive learning experience to the participating students, from the preparatory digital design and management software trainings, the creation of the bridge’s digital design, the methodology formulation up to the execution of the realistic scale models.
As the competition moved from one phase to another, the number of competing teams was narrowed down, and the following were recognized as the best team in each phase of the competition: Technological University of the Philippines Cavite – Gray Builders (Best in Digital Design), Technological University of the Philippines Manila – TUP Leonns (Best in Methodology Formulation), and New Era University – Bridge iNEUvators (Best in Construction Execution).
After combining the results from the three (3) phases, Technological University of the Philippines Manila – TUP Leonns received the highest score and was named the Grand Champion of Skills Olympics 2022.
With how it was received by the Industry and Academe in its first year, The Construction Manpower Development Foundation (CMDF) together with its partners, Philippine Constructors Association Inc. (PCA) and Bentley Education are keen to institutionalize the competition as an annual event and vow to make it a more inclusive and student-centric one in the years to come.
