LOS ANGELES (AFP) – The beloved character Baby Yoda, from the hit Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” is set to make his big-screen debut in a new Star Wars movie titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” announced Lucasfilm on Tuesday.

The film, to be directed by Jon Favreau, the creator of “The Mandalorian,” will feature the mysterious bounty hunter Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) and his adorable companion, Grogu, known to fans as Baby Yoda.

Favreau expressed his excitement about bringing the characters to the big screen, saying, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Production for “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is expected to begin later this year. While it is unclear whether Pascal will reprise his role, the movie is anticipated to be the first new Star Wars film since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”

Other upcoming Star Wars projects are also in the works, with directors such as Taika Waititi and James Mangold attached to separate films. However, some previously announced films, including those to be directed by Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins, have been put on hold.

In a statement, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy praised Favreau and “Mandalorian” co-creator Dave Filoni for introducing “two new and beloved characters” to the Star Wars universe and described “The Mandalorian & Grogu” as “a perfect fit for the big screen.”
