Salahog experiences fluctuations but ultimately catches up with Quiban at the top

Justin Quiban and Nilo Salahog are locked in a tight battle for the lead midway through the ICTSI South Pacific Classic in Davao City. Salahog fired a 68 to rejoin Quiban at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds.

Salahog showcased his skills on Tuesday, shooting a superb 67 in challenging conditions. He continued his strong play on Wednesday, recording a four-birdie run in the first 12 holes. Although he briefly lost the lead with a miscue on the 13th, Salahog responded with a birdie on the 17th to tie Quiban at the helm at nine-under 135.

Quiban, who is pursuing his second Philippine Golf Tour victory, put in a solid performance with a 67. He expressed confidence in his game and his ability to shoot low rounds. Quiban’s consistent play has been impressive, especially after a series of tournaments abroad.

Both Salahog and Quiban will face a tough challenge in the remaining 36 holes of the P2 million championship. Other players also made their presence felt, with Marvin Dumandan in solo third at 137 and Rupert Zaragosa bouncing back with a four-under card for a 138.

Former champion Tony Lascuña and local players Elee Bisera, Elmer Salvador, Jay Bayron, and Ferdie Aunzo are also in contention, highlighting the depth of talent in the field.

Meanwhile, Clyde Mondilla, who is seeking a three-peat, struggled on the demanding South Pacific course and sits eight strokes behind the leaders.

Quiban, being the front-runner, is ready to face the challenge from both experienced professionals and emerging stars. He acknowledged that experience and focus will be key factors in the final two rounds. However, Quiban also emphasized the importance of luck on the unpredictable greens of South Pacific.

The tournament promises an exciting finish as the players battle it out for the championship title.
