Romualdez announces plans for House to invest a minimum of P3B in Pag-asa Island development initiatives

House of Representatives Allocates P3 Billion for Development Projects in Pag-asa Island

In a recent announcement, House Speaker Martin Romualdez revealed that the House of Representatives is planning to allocate at least P3 billion for development projects in Pag-asa Island, located in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). This move comes after Romualdez led a group of congressmen on a visit to Pag-asa Island, aiming to gain insights into the needs of the locals.

During the visit, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Romeo Brawner Jr. accompanied the solons. Romualdez highlighted the importance of the planned projects, stating, “Well initially, just for the airport and the reclamation here, we’re looking at a budget of at least P3 billion for the airport reclamation extension, which coincides with the naval port and fishing sanctuary [for fishermen].” This indicates a comprehensive approach to addressing various infrastructure needs on the island.

Furthermore, when asked whether Pag-asa Island would receive a share from the billions worth of confidential and intelligence funds (CIF) that the House intends to realign, Romualdez confirmed that a portion of those funds will be allocated to the island. He added, “Beyond that, we’re thinking of tapping even larger funds for it.”

Romualdez assured the people of Pag-asa and the entire Kalayaan Island Group that support and assistance are on the way, emphasizing the House of Representatives’ leadership in the budget allocation process. He also expressed the possibility of freeing up additional funding during the bicameral conference committee meeting on the P5.768-trillion General Appropriations Bill (GAB), the proposed national budget for 2024.

The focus of the development projects includes reclamation efforts to facilitate the construction of a longer and wider runway, as well as a naval port and fishing port area. Romualdez said, “We’re here to look at where we could do more improvements. There is a possibility of putting up a naval wharf right here and repair this port here as well.”

The planned allocation of P3 billion for the development of Pag-asa Island showcases the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and addressing the needs of the local communities. Through these initiatives, the House of Representatives aims to create a brighter future for Pag-asa Island and the surrounding areas in the West Philippine Sea.
