Top cross country rider Shagne Yaoyao and four other Filipino cyclists are currently in Kanchanaburi, Thailand to compete in the UCI Thailand MTB Cup, which began on Tuesday, January 16. The goal for the Filipina riders is to earn precious UCI points and rise in the Asian leaderboard, which will serve as a basis for qualification in the Paris Games.

With the Paris qualification deadline looming in April, the 26-year-old Yaoyao is joined by Nicole Quinones, Diannah Costes, Urika Iwayan, and Jwyn Muyco as they vie in the women’s elite race category. Their mission is to earn points and help the Philippines land among the top 3 nations in Asia.

The Filipina contenders face tough competition from national teams and clubs from a range of countries including host Thailand, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, New Zealand, Israel, Great Britain, Germany, Indonesia, and Chinese Taipei. The pressure is on for these riders to perform at their best and elevate the Philippines’ standing in the international arena.

Meanwhile, the Go for Gold team, composed of seven riders, is also aiming to shine in the men’s elite category. John Andre Aguja leads the team, supported by James Carl Dela Cruz, Gart Gaerlan, Adrian Nacario, Mark Louwell Valdermma, Justine Anastacio, and Dave Roa.

The athletes are determined and focused on showcasing their skills and bringing honor to the Philippines as they gun for a spot in the Paris Games. The competition in Thailand will be a crucial step in their Olympic bid, and their performances will be closely watched by fans and officials alike.
