Peak heat index of 42 to 47ºC reported in 15 regions

Peak heat index of 42ºC to 46ºC recorded in 15 areas, warns Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported a peak heat index ranging from 42ºC to 46ºC in 15 areas on Tuesday.

Pagasa defines the heat index as a measure of how high humidity contributes to reducing the body’s ability to cool itself in abnormally high temperatures. A heat index in the range of 42ºC to 51ºC falls under the “danger category” and can lead to heat-related illnesses such as cramps, exhaustion, and even heat stroke with prolonged exposure.

On April 16, Pagasa’s latest data showed the following areas with a heat index of or above 42ºC:
– Dagupan City, Pangasinan: 43ºC
– Bacnotan, La Union: 43ºC
– Aparri, Cagayan: 42ºC
– Tuguegarao City, Cagayan: 42ºC
– Casiguran, Aurora: 42ºC
– Sangley Point, Cavite: 42ºC
– Ambulong, Tanauan, Batangas: 44ºC
– Puerto Princesa, Palawan: 44ºC
– Aborlan, Palawan: 46ºC
– Virac, Catanduanes: 42ºC
– Pili, Camarines Sur: 42ºC
– Iloilo City, Iloilo: 43ºC
– Dumangas, Iloilo: 43ºC
– Catarman, Northern Samar: 42ºC
– Tacloban City, Leyte: 43ºC

In light of the high heat index, the public is advised to take precautions such as limiting time outdoors, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and avoiding alcohol and caffeinated drinks. Using umbrellas, hats, and long-sleeved clothing when outdoors is also recommended, along with scheduling strenuous activities during cooler parts of the day.

Pagasa also provided guidelines in case of a heat-related emergency, suggesting actions like moving the person to a shaded area, providing cool water for hydration, and seeking medical assistance promptly.

As the heat index remains high in various areas, the public is reminded to take necessary measures to prevent heat-related illnesses and stay safe during extreme temperatures.
