Meralco Secures Victory Over Converge in 2023 PBA Commissioner’s Cup

Meralco delivered a strong performance and handed Converge a reality check with a 105-99 victory in the 2023 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Sunday, Dec. 17.

The Bolts dominated the FiberXers in the first half, establishing a large lead before overcoming a late surge from their opponents. This win extends their winning streak to four games and ties them with the Phoenix Fuel Masters for the second spot in the standings with a 6-1 record.

Import Zach Lofton led Meralco with 30 points and eight rebounds, supported by Chris Banchero with 21 points in just 23 minutes of play. Allein Maliksi also contributed 20 points with four three-pointers, and Chris Newsome finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Meralco’s strong performance in the first half set the tone for the game, as they secured a significant lead and maintained their advantage through the second half. Despite Converge’s efforts to narrow the gap in the last few minutes, Meralco held on for the win.

Converge’s import Jamil Wilson struggled against Meralco’s defense, finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. The FiberXers now sit at a 1-7 record in the standings and face an uphill battle to remain in playoff contention.

The victory also guarantees Meralco a spot in the playoffs, joining Phoenix and Magnolia in the postseason. With their impressive performance, Meralco has established themselves as a strong contender in the 2023 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
