Manila Water Celebrates Women Employees on International Women’s Day

MANILA, Philippines — Manila Water took the opportunity on International Women’s Day to honor and celebrate the pivotal role played by its women employees in delivering high-quality water and wastewater services to the public.

Nadine Galino, who began her career as a trainee in the company’s Cadetship Program back in 2015, has since risen to the position of Water Treatment Operations Head. Galino, a Chemical Engineering graduate, initially trained as a Shift Head, a role typically dominated by men.

Reflecting on her early days in the company, Galino noted the challenges she faced as one of the few female shift heads in Water Supply Operations. Despite the physical demands of the role, including routine plant inspections and field activities, Galino persevered and found inspiration in female mentors.

As she transitioned to her current role, Galino emphasized the importance of leveraging her unique perspective as a woman in a male-dominated environment. Manila Water takes pride in its commitment to gender equality, boasting nearly equal representation of women in senior leadership positions.

Guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals on Gender Equality and Decent Work and Economic Growth, Manila Water has implemented a Code of Conduct to prevent discrimination based on gender, race, age, or any other bias. The company aims to create a workplace where every employee has the opportunity to thrive and excel.

In a step towards greater inclusivity, Manila Water began including common-law and LGBTQI+ partners of its employees as dependents in the company’s group life insurance and health insurance policy in 2023. This initiative covers employees across various categories.

Moreover, a collaborative effort between Manila Water and the University of the Philippines College of Law has led to the launch of the Katubig Development Program. This program includes mandatory training on gender sensitivity for employees, highlighting the company’s dedication to promoting a diverse and inclusive work environment.
