Labor Day salary stays the same

Workers across the country were left disappointed as Labor Secretary reiterated that there will be no announcement of a wage hike this Labor Day. According to the Labor Secretary, all Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards have already issued orders granting pay increases for minimum wage earners and domestic workers.

“The round of minimum wage adjustments is done. Over and above that, we are leaving it to the legislature,” the Labor Secretary stated in a radio interview. Emphasizing that the legislated wage increase is mandated by Congress and beyond the authority of the Department of Labor and Employment.

Various labor groups gathered at Quiapo Church to push for a wage hike and protest against the proposed Charter change. Labor federations and workers’ groups are also set to stage a Labor Day protest action, demanding the immediate passage of a P150 legislated wage hike pending before the House of Representatives.

In a separate development, delivery riders of app-based courier service providers, including Lalamove, Grab, Angkas, MoveIt, and Joyride, are holding a nationwide strike today due to high deductions on their commissions. Around 50,000 riders are expected to participate in the protest, demanding an increase in their base fare share. The Department of Information and Communications Technology has stated that they will summon Lalamove to investigate any potential violations committed by the courier service.
