Man’s Proposal at TWICE Concert Goes Viral
Quezon City – In a heartwarming moment during the concert of popular K-Pop girl group TWICE, a man from Quezon City successfully proposed to his girlfriend, bringing smiles and cheers from the crowd. The magical event took place at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan on Sunday, Oct. 1.
Gelo Fontanilla and Charlene “Cha” Valderama shared their romantic journey and proposal story in an exclusive interview with Manila Bulletin. The couple’s love story began back in 2012 when Cha moved from Bulacan to Quezon City. They became neighbors, living in houses facing each other, with a basketball court in between where Gelo and his friends often played.
Their relationship took off in 2014 when Gelo noticed that Cha was receiving inappropriate remarks from a group of men playing at the court. Concerned for her well-being, Gelo reached out to her on Facebook. As their communication continued, their bond grew stronger, and Gelo eventually decided to court her.
Gelo described Cha as someone he felt comfortable with from the start. “During the early stages of our relationship, I was sure about her. With her, I found my oasis,” he said. Cha expressed her love and appreciation for Gelo, stating, “He always gives me assurance, and I always feel safe when I’m with him. I knew from the beginning that I found my Mr. Right and My Greatest Love.”
The couple’s shared love for K-Pop played a significant role in their journey. Gelo started listening to K-Pop songs around 2016 or 2017, and Cha introduced him to the TWICE group. In March 2023, they attended the “Born Pink” concert by K-Pop group Blackpink. Gelo decided that if Blackpink ever had an encore in the Philippines, he would propose to his girlfriend.
When they learned about TWICE’s upcoming concert in the country, Gelo saw it as the perfect opportunity to propose. Despite their initial financial concerns, luck was on their side, and Gelo managed to purchase two VIP tickets for the concert. He had already planned to sit in the VIP section to increase their chances of getting noticed by the group and receiving their help with the proposal.
Gelo brought a banner written in Hangul that said, “TWICE, please help me propose to my girlfriend. Thank you!” He also invited one of Cha’s friends to witness the proposal. During the concert, Dahyun, one of the TWICE members, glanced at the banner and thought Gelo was proposing to the group. Though TWICE didn’t notice them, Gelo still managed to kneel and propose in front of thousands of fans.
Cha was both ecstatic and surprised by the proposal. She mentioned that Gelo is not known for keeping surprises, so she had no idea what he was planning. When he kneeled and presented the ring, she couldn’t believe it was happening. “Is this really happening?” she exclaimed.
Gelo expressed his gratitude to Cha for believing in him and supporting his fanboy moments over the years. He also promised to be by her side throughout their journey called life. Cha declared her love and support for Gelo as a K-Pop fan and expressed her joy in spending every day with him.
The heartwarming proposal ended with Cha answering Gelo’s question, “What is love?” Her reply was straightforward, “I love you, and the answer will always be ‘Yes or Yes.'”
