March 1 is World Seagrass Day!

March 1, 2023 marks the first ever UN-recognized World Seagrass Day. On May 23, 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring March 1 as the “World Seagrass Day” to underscore the urgent need to promote and facilitate actions for the conservation of seagrasses.

Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that are found in shallow waters in many parts of the world, from the tropics to the Arctic Circle.

Seagrasses play a vital role in maintaining the health and productivity of our oceans as they filter, cycle, and store nutrients and pollutants. They also play a significant role in climate change mitigation and adaptation, as they can store up to 18% of the world’s oceanic carbon.

Let’s protect and preserve these incredible underwater ecosystems for future generations.
