Angels Secure Top Seed in Semifinals

Petro Gazz Secures Top Seed in PVL Semis Behind MJ Philips’ Return

Manila, Philippines — Petro Gazz is aiming for its first-ever Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference championship, and they understand the importance of having a talented roster. This need for talent was highlighted by the return of MJ Philips.

After a stint in the Korean league, Philips made a triumphant comeback as she helped the Angels defeat the Nxled Chameleons with a score of 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22. This victory secured Petro Gazz the top seeding in the semifinals, held at the PhilSports Arena.

Despite still adjusting to the team’s Japanese coach Koji Tsuzurabara’s system, Philips managed to contribute 11 points to lead Petro Gazz to a 9-2 record, placing them at the top of the standings after the elimination round.

Brooke Van Sickle delivered an outstanding performance with 26 points, supported by Jonah Sabete and Aiza Pontillas who added 12 and 11 hits, respectively. Ivy Perez also made an impact off the bench with 11 excellent sets and six hits.

However, it was Philips’ return that caught the most attention, showcasing Petro Gazz’s determination to claim their third championship in the league, and their first non-Reinforced Conference title.

“I felt good to be back honestly. It’s been an adjustment in the new system, new players,” said Philips. “It’s very important to me because I want to see it as a trial run on how I would fit in with the team.”
