Abalos permits PNP, BJMP, BFP personnel to don light uniforms

In order to address the challenges posed by the rising heat index in the Philippines, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos has instructed police, fire, and jail officers to wear light uniforms while on duty.

In an urgent memorandum, Abalos directed the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to advise their personnel to don lighter uniforms to prevent heat-related illnesses. This measure is aimed at reducing discomfort and minimizing the risks of heat cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke among uniformed personnel.

Abalos emphasized the importance of ensuring the welfare of these frontline workers, especially considering the additional hazards brought about by extreme heat temperatures. The DILG chief highlighted the need to protect the PNP, BFP, and BJMP personnel as they carry out their duties.

The order comes in response to warnings from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration about the persistence of dangerous heat index levels in various parts of the country until mid-May. The Department of Health has also advised the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Colonel Jean Fajardo, chief information officer of the PNP, mentioned that police officers on field duties are now allowed to wear more comfortable patrol shirts. This applies to those performing patrol duties, including members of units like the Highway Patrol Group and special weapons and tactics teams.

The DILG’s directive aims to prioritize the well-being of uniformed personnel who work tirelessly to uphold public safety and security in the face of challenging conditions.
