DHSUD, OPAMINE to build 180,000 housing units in Davao City

The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Mindanao-Eastern (OPAMINE) have announced plans to construct approximately 180,000 housing units in Davao City as part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s national housing program.

During the year-end Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao, OPAMINE Leo Tereso A. Magno revealed the goals for the housing program. According to Magno, studies conducted by the DHSUD and National Housing Authority (NHA) have indicated that Davao City requires 180,000 housing units.

“The proposal to build the needed housing units in Davao City is now being reviewed. There are already proposals. The DHSUD has examined three to four areas owned by the city government of Davao,” said Magno. He also mentioned that they are coordinating with Mayor Sebastian Duterte.

In an earlier statement, Mayor Duterte expressed the city government’s commitment to address the housing needs of its people through the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino housing program. Magno added that the DHSUD has identified potential areas for constructing affordable housing units and is working to align with the goals of the 4PH program.

The 4PH program, which was launched in September, aims to provide economical housing solutions for the homeless in the Philippines. The objective is to construct one million housing units each year, ultimately reaching around 6.5 million by 2028.

Magno expressed hope that proposals and designs from various developers will be completed by January of next year to kickstart the housing project early in 2023. He emphasized that the collaboration between DHSUD and OPAMINE aims to provide 380,000 housing units for those who are facing housing challenges in the Davao region. Both organizations are committed to supporting one another to ensure that the initiative positively impacts homeless people, particularly in Regions 10, 11, 12, and 13.
