CAAP Expanded Passenger Terminal Building of Butuan Airport Officially Inaugurated, Boosting Tourism and Trade in Butuan and Agusan del Norte

Butuan City, Philippines – The Butuan Airport has officially opened its newly expanded passenger terminal building, following the completion of the Php 24.5 million development project on 18 December 2022. The airport, which is a Principal Class 1 Airport serving Butuan City and Agusan del Norte, underwent an extensive renovation that involved the expansion, rehabilitation, improvement, and beautification of the existing terminal building.

With the expansion, the airport can now accommodate a total of 616 passengers, up from the previous 248 passenger capacity. The available space of the terminal has also been increased from 1,440 sqm. to 2,016 sqm., providing a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for passengers.

Speaking at the inauguration event, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director General Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo expressed his optimism about the impact of the project on the community and the socio-economic growth of Butuan and Agusan del Norte, as well as Mindanao.

“As Butuan continues to progress, the DOTr, CAAP, together with the LGU, worked with tremendous efforts to deliver this development with the aim of welcoming even more travelers and tourists to the city and in the surrounding Agusan del Norte Province. This is in line with the goal to provide locals and tourists with safer journeys to the different parts of the country,” said Director General Tamayo. “This is aligned with our objective of creating and providing safe, efficient, secured, and comfortable transport services to the Filipino people.”
The project scope includes civil structural works, architectural works, plumbing works, mechanical works, ceiling works, tileworks, painting works, electrical works, landscaping, and steel works. The airport currently caters to 12 flights daily from Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines, with its 2.1km runway capable of accommodating the 179-seater Airbus 320/321.

The inauguration event was attended by CAAP Director General Tamayo, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports Roberto Cecilio Lim, CAAP Deputy Director General for Administration Atty. Danjun G. Lucas, CAAP Chief Financial Officer Marianne Raymundo, CAAP Area Center 12 Manager Evangeline Daba, CAAP Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) Chief MGen. Ricardo Banayat (Ret.), as well as local agency officials.

The Butuan Airport’s expansion project is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the aviation infrastructure in the country, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the travel experience of passengers.
