‘Barbie’ Reigns over Box Office while ‘Oppenheimer’ Achieves New Heights in Memorable Weekend

“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” Dominate the Box Office, Exceeding Expectations and Offering Hope to the Film Industry

The combination of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” proved to be a major success at the box office this weekend. The two films, which garnered significant attention on social media, drew audiences back to theaters in record numbers, surpassing projections and providing a glimmer of hope to the struggling exhibition business amidst ongoing strikes.

Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” claimed the top spot, raking in an impressive $155 million in ticket sales from North American theaters across 4,243 locations. This not only makes it the biggest opening of the year, surpassing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and every Marvel film, but also breaks the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film directed by a woman. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Oppenheimer” also exceeded expectations, earning $80.5 million from 3,610 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. This marks Nolan’s biggest debut outside of the Batman franchise and one of the best openings for an R-rated biographical drama.

What makes this weekend even more remarkable is that both films achieved high box office numbers simultaneously. “Barbie” earned $182 million internationally from 69 territories, resulting in a global weekend total of $337 million. “Oppenheimer” brought in $93.7 million from 78 territories, particularly outperforming “Barbie” in India, and achieved a global total of $174.2 million. When all is said and done, this weekend is expected to be one of the top four highest-earning weekends in box office history, with a total industrywide revenue of over $300 million.

Both films had a strong positive impact on the industry, especially considering the current trend of intellectual property-driven films dominating the market. The success of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” started as a friendly competition between two different aesthetic styles, but both movies ultimately benefited. Critically acclaimed with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 90% and 94%, respectively, and A CinemaScores from audiences, the films generated lively discussions and reactions on social media throughout the weekend, contributing to the overall buzz surrounding them.

The only notable casualty amid the success of “Barbenheimer” was “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I.” Despite positive reviews and a solid opening weekend, the film experienced a 64% drop in its second weekend, likely overshadowed by the popularity of “Barbie” and the loss of IMAX screens to “Oppenheimer.” However, “Mission: Impossible” still managed to add $19.5 million to its domestic total of $118.8 million.

The demographics of the audience for each film were distinctive but contributed to their success. “Barbie” attracted a predominantly female audience, making up 65% of viewers, with 40% of ticket buyers under the age of 25. On the other hand, “Oppenheimer” saw a predominantly male audience (62%) with 63% of viewers over the age of 25, including a surprising 32% between the ages of 18 and 24.

The positive reception and massive box office success of both films could not have come at a better time for Hollywood. As the industry continues to grapple with striking actors and writers over fair contracts, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” became the final films of 2023 to embark on a global press tour. The movies maximized their star power with extensive promotion efforts right up until their releases. However, the ongoing strike has led studios to delay the release of some fall films, such as the highly anticipated Zendaya tennis drama “Challengers.”

Overall, this weekend marks a significant turning point for the film industry, as it demonstrates the potential for multiple films to succeed simultaneously. The success of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” boosted box office momentum and provided a positive story that could continue for weeks to come. With the monumental success of this weekend prompting excitement and anticipation among audiences, the movie theater experience has reemerged as a valuable and must-not-miss event.
