Top 20 Highest-Earning Films Unveiled for South Korea in 2023



The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) has released its 2023 report on the top-grossing films in South Korea. The data collected from KOFIC’s Korea Box Office Integrated System showed that in 2023, South Korea saw a decrease in the number of films released, with 1,536 films compared to 1,774 films in 2022.

Despite a decrease in the number of films, the 2023 total admissions reached 125,135,911, which was an improvement from 112,805,094 in 2022. Furthermore, the gross from films released in 2023 reached a total of 1.26 trillion won (about $960.14 million) as compared to 1.16 trillion won (about $884.25 million) in 2022.

According to KOFIC, the top-grossing film of 2023 in South Korea was “12.12: THE DAY,” a Korean film released on Nov. 22. The film grossed $88.12 million and had a total of 11.85 million admissions.

Following closely, “The Roundup: No Way Out” secured the second spot with total admissions of 10.68 million and a gross of $79.97 million.

Other successful films in South Korea in 2023 include “Elemental” from the U.S., “Suzume” from Japan, and “Smugglers” from Korea.
