Predicted motorcycle sales for 2023 expected to surpass 1.5 million units

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) has predicted that domestic motorcycle sales in the Philippines could reach 1.6 million units by the end of this year, surpassing last year’s record of 1.5 million units. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, MDPPA expects steady growth throughout the year.

According to the recent report by MDPPA on Wednesday, August 30, motorcycle sales in the first semester of 2021 have already reached 932,220 units, reflecting a 4.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year, which saw sales of 890,720 units.

The MDPPA, consisting of OEMs Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha, hailed the January-July sales as a significant milestone for the group. MDPPA President Norminio “Boying” Mojica stated that after conducting a comprehensive review of sales targets for the remainder of the year, the members unanimously agreed on aiming for a modest yet steady five percent growth rate in motorcycle sales from August to December.

Mojica emphasized that the sales performance during the first semester could be indicative of what is to come in the subsequent semester. The MDPPA’s goal is to achieve an impressive cumulative sale of 1.6 million units by the end of 2023, surpassing last year’s remarkable 1.5-million sales record.

However, MDPPA expressed concerns about potential challenges posed by global and local economic factors. Rising prices, supply chain issues, and a mix of in-person and remote work setups, all consequences of the pandemic, could potentially hinder the projected growth.

Mojica added that historically, the months of September, October, and November have consistently shown heightened sales volumes, while August and December have maintained average sales profiles. MDPPA’s ability to recognize seasonal fluctuations and analyze motorcycle sales patterns in the country highlight their expertise in the industry.

The MDPPA remains optimistic about the outlook for motorcycle sales in the Philippines, despite the uncertainties caused by the lingering effects of the pandemic.
