Philippines Government Officials Attend International Symposium on Traveler Identification and Border Control

Government officials from various agencies in the Philippines came together to enhance policies and practices on traveler identification and border control. The symposium aimed to ensure safe and seamless travel for all individuals. The event, which took place in Montreal, Canada, from September 12-14, 2023, saw over a thousand attendees from more than 30 countries and jurisdictions.

Representing the Philippines were officials and staff from the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), the Philippine Embassy in Canada, the APO Production Unit, Inc., and the Bureau of Immigration. The PCO released a statement discussing the importance of the symposium in addressing technological advancements, improved policies, and best practices regarding traveler identification and border control.

The symposium focused on the ICAO Traveller Identification Programme (TRIP) and the Joint International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) Biometrics Forum. These two parts of the symposium provided attendees with valuable information and a platform to exchange ideas on all aspects of traveler identification management. The PCO emphasized the need for international cooperation and collaboration to enhance the traveler’s experience while simultaneously addressing the numerous threats faced by international civil aviation.

During the symposium, various topics were discussed, including biometrics technology, machine-readable travel documents, document issuance and control, inspection systems and tools, interoperable applications, and capacity-building and assistance to states. These discussions aimed to improve traveler identification management and ensure the utmost efficiency and security at border controls.

Additionally, the ICAO/INTERPOL Joint Biometrics Forum shed light on best practices, specifications, and technical mechanisms necessary for the successful application and use of biometrics. The forum also emphasized INTERPOL’s role in counterterrorism efforts, further emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in ensuring global security.

Overall, the Philippines’ participation in the symposium highlights the government’s commitment to staying at the forefront of traveler identification and border control policies and practices. By actively engaging with international partners, the Philippines aims to provide safe and seamless travel experiences for its citizens and visitors alike.
