Moviegoer Demands End to Collection of Entertainment Tax

Director Joel Lamangan Calls for Government Intervention to Support TV and Movie Workers

In a recent industry forum held in Mandaluyong City, director Joel Lamangan emphasized the need for the government to address the working conditions of TV and movie workers. Lamangan, former president of the Directors Guild of the Philippines Inc. (DGPI) and Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Pelikulang Pilipino (NMPP), stressed that it is not enough to focus on the number of working hours during filming; workers should also have adequate work opportunities.

The consultation forum, organized by Senator Robinhood Padilla, aimed to rally support for the Eddie Garcia Bill, which seeks to protect the rights of both major and minor players in the TV and film industries. Industry leaders, workers, and various guild representatives, including AKTOR and the Film Academy of the Philippines, were present to express their concerns. These concerns include low wages, long working hours, and the lack of insurance coverage while on set.

To address these issues, Lamangan proposed that the government should stop collecting entertainment tax and instead subsidize the industry. He argued that fewer investors are willing to produce movies due to the decline in theater attendance and the high ticket prices, which range from P300 to P650 in Metro Manila.

The Eddie Garcia Bill has gained support from Senators Jinggoy Ejercito and Ramon Bong Revilla Jr., further increasing its chances of passing. Meanwhile, Lamangan’s presence in the TV series FPJ’s Batang Quiapo has sparked significant interest among viewers. He portrays the character of Rhoda, a colorful and eccentric individual whose life revolves around money.

Before becoming a director, Lamangan was a full-time theater actor at PETA, where he often played tough and intimidating roles. Rhoda provides a refreshing departure from his previous portrayals, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft.

In other news, Senator Robin Padilla inadvertently became the center of attention after a live-selling episode hosted by his wife, Mariel Rodriguez. During the episode, Padilla’s accidental exposure became a viral sensation, with netizens quick to share the incident.
