Manila Southwoods makes a strong comeback to win 9th Interclub championship



Manila Southwoods emerged victorious in the PAL Interclub Men’s regular tournament held at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club in Cagayan de Oro City. The team battled back from a five-point deficit to clinch a 13-point triumph over Eastridge.

Youthful player Shinichi Suzuki played a critical role in Southwoods’ victory, scoring an impressive 42 points, equivalent to six-under par 66 in stroke play. With solid support from Masaichi Otake and Miko Granada, Southwoods secured a total score of 429 over four days, outclassing Eastridge, which finished with 416 points.

Southwoods’ skipper, Thirdy Escaño, credited the team’s young players for their stellar performance, leading the team to its ninth championship win. Suzuki, just 15 years old, expressed the pressure he felt to deliver and considered his round as one of his best, contributing not only to his individual success but also to the team’s overall triumph.

The victory was particularly sweet for Southwoods as it was the first time the team came from behind to claim the title. Despite falling behind by 13 points in the first round, Southwoods staged an impressive comeback, ultimately securing the significant win.

In other divisions, Cebu Country Club regained the Founders title, while Zamboanga Golf and San Juanico Golf Park & Country Club emerged as winners in their respective categories. Overall, it was a thrilling competition that showcased the skill and determination of the participating teams.
