Jose Rizal University Secures Overtime Win Against Letran in NCAA Season 99 Opener

Pasay City, Philippines – Jose Rizal University made an impressive comeback and spoiled Letran’s new head coach Rensy Bajar’s debut with a thrilling 85-79 overtime victory on the opening day of the 2023 NCAA Season 99. The game took place at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, September 24.

Marwin Dionisio and Agem Miranda led the way for Jose Rizal University, taking advantage of Letran’s 29 turnovers, which resulted in 35 points for the host team. The turnovers proved to be the deciding factor in the extra period, with Dionisio making the most of Letran’s mistakes and sinking a crucial three-pointer to give JRU a 76-73 lead.

However, Letran’s Kurt Reyson and Kobe Monje responded and briefly took the lead 77-76 in favor of the defending champions. Nevertheless, Miranda answered back with two consecutive baskets, reclaiming an 80-77 advantage for the Heavy Bombers. They held onto that lead until the final buzzer.

Reyson led the scoring for the Knights with 18 points, while Kevin Santos contributed 16 points. Rookie Deo Cuajao, who made the game-tying three-pointer for Letran, finished with 12 points.

The victory marks a strong start for Jose Rizal University in the new season, while Letran will be looking to bounce back from the disappointing defeat under their new head coach.
