Joey de Leon’s Enigmatic Statement About the Importance of Timing

Popular TV host Joey de Leon recently shared a cryptic post on his Instagram account, discussing the idea of “celebrating” victory for the right reasons. While he did not mention any specific group, de Leon emphasized the importance of celebrating success without infringing on others.

In the post, de Leon wrote, “There’s nothing wrong with celebrating for the right reasons. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating without stepping on anyone’s toes, and stealing.”

This comment comes after de Leon recently thanked Television and Production Exponents (TAPE) Inc. for promoting TV5’s noontime show “E.A.T.” At the same time, TAPE successfully renewed the trademark registration for their long-running show “Eat Bulaga” for another 10 years.

However, de Leon and his comedy trio partners Tito Sotto and Vic Sotto (TVJ) pointed out that TAPE’s victory was not significant, as it was just a ministerial decision by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to grant the renewal of trademark registration. TVJ lawyer Enrique dela Cruz Jr. explained that as long as the applicant submits a declaration of actual use and pays the fee, the renewal is granted even while a petition for cancellation is pending at the IPO Bureau of Legal Affairs.

De Leon’s remarks hint at his dissatisfaction with the situation, suggesting that TAPE’s victory may not be as meaningful as it initially appears. Whether there are deeper tensions between the two productions remains to be seen.
