Acclaimed MMFF Best Picture winner ‘Firefly’ set to hit cinemas in the UAE, California
Filipino movie enthusiasts and other film aficionados abroad can look forward to a special treat to kick off the year as the highly-acclaimed Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Best Picture winner ‘Firefly’ will be shown at cinemas in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and California, USA.
GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs are set to present ‘Firefly’ to international audiences in the UAE beginning on January 18. The film will be shown at various cinemas in Dubai, including Reel Cinema Dubai Mall, Novo Dragon Mart, Novo Megaplex IBN, Vox Burjuman Center, Vox City Center Deira, and Star Al Ghurair Center. In addition, there will be a showing at Star Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi, Novo Manar in Rak, Star Grand Mall in Ajman, and Star Al Ain Cineplex in Al Ain. A special advance screening of ‘Firefly’ will take place on January 17 at Star Cinemas, Al Ghurair Centre at 7:30 PM.
Aside from the Middle East, the film will also be screened in Los Angeles, California as part of the Metro Manila International Film Festival from January 30 to February 2. Screenings will be held at TCL Chinese 6 theaters on January 30 (5:55 PM) and February 1 (3:00 PM), and at DGA Film Complex on February 2 (12:00 PM).
In December 2023, ‘Firefly’ emerged as a powerful underdog at the 49th MMFF Gabi ng Parangal, taking home three major awards, including the coveted Best Picture nod, Best Screenplay for GMA Public Affairs Senior AVP and ‘Firefly’ creator Angeli Atienza, and Best Child Actor for Euwenn Mikaell.
Directed by Zig Dulay, ‘Firefly’ tells the story of Tonton and his journey to finding the mystical island of fireflies based on his mother’s bedtime stories. The film features an all-star cast, including Alessandra de Rossi, Dingdong Dantes, Epy Quizon, Ysabel Ortega, Miguel Tanfelix, Cherry Pie Picache, Yayo Aguila, Kokoy de Santos, and Max Collins.
Following the screenings in the UAE and Los Angeles, ‘Firefly’ will soon be made available in other parts of the US and Asia.
