Calls for Marcos to withdraw from politics urge critics to keep armed services out of politics

National Security Adviser Calls for Neutrality in Armed Forces Amid Political Maneuvering

In a recent development, National Security Adviser (NSA) Eduardo Año has urged administration detractors to refrain from involving the armed services in political maneuvering. This call came after lawmaker Pantaleon Alvarez urged the military to withdraw its support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

During a news forum in Quezon City, NSA spokesperson Jonathan Malaya emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) within a democratic framework. Malaya explained that in a democracy, the military is expected to remain neutral and apolitical despite changes in administration.

Malaya dismissed suggestions that the AFP should withdraw support from Marcos, noting that all major units of the armed services have expressed full support for the commander-in-chief. He also urged critics to respect the professionalism and integrity of the Armed Forces and avoid dragging them into political disputes.

Alvarez, who later apologized for his call to withdraw military support from the Marcos administration, drew criticism for his actions. The incident has shed light on rumors of a rift between the Marcoses and the Dutertes, fueled by allegations of drug abuse, threats to split the country, and rumors of a coup plot.

Despite the political tensions, Año’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping the armed services out of political manipulation and ensuring their neutrality in upholding democracy.
