Andy Serkis to both direct and act in upcoming ‘Gollum’ film within ‘Lord of the Rings’ universe

A new “Lord of the Rings” movie featuring the character Gollum is currently in development, with Andy Serkies set to both reprise his role as Gollum and direct the film, tentatively titled “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.”

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has confirmed that the “Gollum” movie will be the first of three planned live-action projects within the “Lord of the Rings” franchise. The original trilogy’s director, Peter Jackson, along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, will be producing the film and are deeply involved in the project.

The script development for the film is currently in its early stages with writers Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, who are also working on the animated film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.” The new film aims to explore untold storylines within the vast mythology of J.R.R. Tolkien.

In a joint statement, Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens expressed their excitement to collaborate with Serkies again on another epic adventure in Middle-earth. Serkies, in his own statement, humorously channeled Gollum’s character, expressing his anticipation for the project.

Peter Jackson previously directed the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which achieved immense success at the box office and garnered numerous Academy Awards. After his role as Gollum, Andy Serkies has become a prominent figure in motion-capture acting, appearing in various blockbuster films and even venturing into directing.

Serkies’s upcoming projects include directing an animated film adaptation of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” and starring in popular franchises like “The Batman” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
