Wife allegedly abused by military general halts CA promotion

Brig. Gen. Ranulfo Sevilla’s Appointment Deferred Amid Domestic Abuse Allegations

The Commission on Appointments (CA) deferred the ad interim appointment of Brig. Gen. Ranulfo Sevilla after his wife accused him of domestic abuse. Sevilla, who currently serves as the deputy commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)-Special Operations Command, faced opposition to his confirmation from his wife.

Tessa Luz Aura Reyes-Sevilla spoke out against her husband, alleging physical abuse and infidelity. She also claimed that Sevilla provided minimal financial assistance to their children and openly displayed his extramarital affair by bringing his mistress to the AFP camp.

In response to the situation, Reyes-Sevilla criticized the AFP for tolerating her husband’s behavior and called for a closer examination of the treatment of military wives who suffer abuse. She emphasized the importance of holding individuals in positions of authority accountable for their actions.

Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri underscored the significance of considering the moral character of officials seeking confirmation, especially during Women’s Month. The CA conducted an executive session to further review Sevilla’s appointment, while confirming the appointments of several other military officials.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) questioned the credibility of the AFP’s reported 86 percent satisfaction rating, casting doubt on the methodology and scope of the survey conducted by the OCTA Research group. Marco Valbuena, CPP’s information officer, expressed skepticism about the survey’s accuracy in representing the sentiments of all segments of the population.
